Proxmox Installation - Part II

Get Proxmox Onto Your Device & Setup

  1. Pop the newly minted boot drive you just created into the machine you intend to install Proxmox on.

  2. Ensure that your machine is connected to your local network so that when the installation looks for and IP data will be populated - if you are confident to set this up with a static address later, have at it. The assigned address will be static in the end but the benefit of having a connection is that the installer will, in most cases, populate a suggested address in CIDR notation with your Gateway.

  3. The next steps require that you ensure you boot to the removable media which, in most cases, can be set up in the BIOS / UEFI. Reboot your system and hit the magic key to boot into your systems setup. For me the key was DEL but other common option are ESC or F11 but could be pretty much whatever the Motherboard manufacturer chooses. Hint - look up your Motherboard

  4. My SBC is not equipped with a Capture card plus, there are differences in how BIOS / UEFI appear. The general principals will be the same however. First thing you'll need to look for is a setting tab that references Boot. Find the Boot option priorities or similar option where you should see listed storage devices. Select your removable Proxmox installer thumb drive. This method may require you to reconfigure again once Proxmox is installed so the Proxmox VE is the default.

  • Alternatively, and perhaps better, would be to check to see if there is a setting for something like Boot Override - My system has this option under the Save & Exit tab. I'll key down to the setting and choose my thumb drive device. Hit enter and you should see the Proxmox Installation splash screen
  1. Select Install Proxmox VE (Graphical) and the installing begins the process

  2. The next screen you'll see is the TOS - you can tab on your keyboard to the I agree button, or connect a mouse to your machine.

  3. Select your Target Harddisk - I only have the internal disk attached so I'll proceed with all the default by clicking Next

  4. Select your Country, the timezone closest to you and your Keyboard layout and click Next

  5. Enter your desired password and an email address and click Next

  6. Select your network interface. If you have a running connection to your network there should be a green dot in front of the network interface list item that is connected. Select that one.

  7. FQDN - Give your Proxmox sever a Fully Qualified Domain Name. This can really be anything you want given it's in the right format. I will follow the structure I gave to my primary server pve.bg-lab.com and call this second server pve2.bg-lab.com

  8. IP Address - my IP was aut-populated with 10.2.1.200/24 - perfect

  9. Gateway - Enter your routers gateway address -- if you aren't sure, this can be found in a few ways depending on your OS - a quick Google search will help. I happen to know mine is 10.2.1.42.

  10. Don't worry too much about DNS server info - mine is populated with my default gateway address which I'll leave for now as 10.2.1.42

  11. Click Next, review your details on the Summary page and then click Install.

  12. After a few minutes, you should see a Welcome message in the command line with instructions to navigate to X address in your browser. Back on your main computer open a browser window and enter the IP address + port number (8006) - mine, as mentioned above, is 10.2.1.200:8006

  13. Your browser should pop up a warning suggesting that "Your connection is not private" - don't listen to it -- we are connecting to something we created so we know it's safe. Click to proceed.

  14. Enter the User name root and the password you set at installation time
